Jennifer & Craig Engagement

Published by bbender under Engagement Sessions

Jennifer and Craig were introduced to me through one of my past clients.  That is an incredible way to earn their business and I am really appreciative.

They chose one of San Diego’s most iconic locations to shoot their engagement images, Balboa Park.  I’ve said it again and again, the Park offers so much diversity all wrapped up in one convenient, easy to navigate location.  We made our way around the Park and captured all sorts of great shots.  And, with a little wardrobe change and a terrific pose, Jennifer & Craig helped create an image that is more a piece of art than a “picture”.  (See the 4th image below)  Everything came together on this one and it turned out amazing!

You will see more of them on my blog after their wedding this summer.

Sutton Family

Published by bbender under Portraits

I have been considering taking on more family sessions because they have proven to be a lot of fun.  And if they all go as well as my most recent session I will definitely have to promote more of this service!

I have known Jen (Domville) Sutton since our Poway High School days.  The Sutton’s were another great family to work with. It has been a lot of fun to see her family grow and I don’t think their kids could be any cuter!

We did this shoot in Old Poway Park.  It is a hidden gem, close to home, with some great elements in it.

Not my normal blog post…

Published by bbender under Weddings

As you can see from the title, this is my first bodybuilding entry, because it’s my first time ever shooting bodybuilders :-) .  I was honored when asked to photograph them because Bobby (right hand side of the first photo) trains both Rachel and I.  I have to admit, after taking these photos, I need to go to the gym more often!!!

Bobby, personal trainer at Frogs gym in Carmel Mountain Ranch, & Ben, fitness director at the same Frog’s, are headed to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the Musclemania America & World Championships. In addition to Musclemania, there are four women’s competitions during the “Fitness America Weekend” (Fitness America, Figure America, Model, and Ms. Bikini America) with 400+ competitors.  Sounds like a good time to be in Las Vegas!!  (I was going to enter myself, but my busy wedding schedule got in the way…lol)

Rachel & I wish them both the best of luck!

Lisa & Joe Wedding

Published by bbender under Weddings

Lisa and Joe have such outgoing personalities!  I shot their engagement images and we had a blast.  As anticipated, their wedding was even more fun.  Their bridal party was just as outgoing and the day was filled with energy and antics!  They let their personalities shine through and we captured some super fun moments.

Weddings at the University of San Diego are often synonymous with the Immaculata Parish.  But Lisa and Joe took advantage of another extraordinary site on the campus, the Founder’s Chapel.  As I understand it, the chapel is for the exclusive use of USD students and alumni.  It is a beautiful site, filled with dark mahogany, white marble and gold leaf accents.  Don’t let the modest entrance fool you, it is a grand chapel, worthy of your consideration.

Dawn & Tom Wedding

Published by bbender under Weddings

Dawn and Tom’s September wedding and reception were held at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.  The RB Inn is unique from many of the other large hotels in the San Diego area because it has so many secluded areas on the property.  It lends to a more intimate feel in the images I am able to get.  The architecture is also truly Southern California; the fountains, stucco, and open plank construction.  All of these elements really give it character and are something to consider when choosing your wedding site.

Dawn and Tom did something unusual with their color scheme that stood out to me and I thought many of you might find useful.  They alternated their color scheme for the cocktail area to the reception hall. The cocktail tables were draped in sage with chocolate highlights and the reception tables were draped in chocolate with sage highlights.  Going from light outside to the darker palette inside really helped set the tone of the evening.  The change in colors also added a lot of visual interest without ruining the continuity of the event.  It was very nicely done.  On that note, I must hand out credit to the staff of bridal consultant, Tami Austin, for putting together a lovely event and DJ, Mike Hogan for keeping the fun going!

Courtney & Jason Wedding

Published by bbender under Weddings

Courtney and Jason hosted a very intimate wedding at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park with their reception following at Bertrand at Mr. A’s (amazing food, by the way!).

The Garden is a totally unique setting, completely different in features than the surrounding Park.  It is tranquil and uncomplicated.  As a photographer I appreciate the setting because it offers me the variety of staying within the Garden for simple backdrops AND taking an easy stroll out into the Park to capture pictures with some of San Diego’s more iconic landmarks.  The best of both worlds!

I was really grabbed by Courtney’s floral selections.  Her showy red bouquet looked spectacular against the simple lines of her dress.  The flowers were the perfect punch of color in the quiet setting of the Garden.  Keep in mind when selecting your flowers; if you are going to showcase something highly vivid or unusual, limit it to one or two elements of your wedding.  Too many fancy things can begin to compete with one another and ultimately get lost in the shuffle.  Courtney & Jason’s wedding is a perfect example of how just a little splash of color can perfectly tie everything together!

By the way, Courtney and Jason were gracious enough to write me a note about their experience working together.  (Refer to my 10/01/08 entry).  Thank you!  Your thoughts mean the world to me!

Setareh & Jerry

Published by bbender under Weddings

If you’ve kept an eye on my blog you may have noticed I photographed the engagement session of Setareh & Jerry.  They recently celebrated their nuptials with a traditional Persian wedding at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.

Persian weddings are always unique and beautiful… from the sugar over the bride and groom’s heads, to sharing honey, to the bride being asked three times before consenting to marriage… while the man must answer the first time.  It is the beauty of these elements that really catches my eye and I know it takes a tremendous amount of planning for the ceremony to go smoothly.  Bridal consultant, Laura Rizzo from Weddings by Design, helped them pull it all together without a hitch.

I have had the fortune of photographing a number of Persian weddings in my career.  This experience definitely helps me stay one step ahead and capture those special rituals. If you plan to include traditions, such as this, in your wedding be sure to share the details ahead of time with your photographer.  The more informed they are the better opportunity they will have to capture those distinctive moments that carry so much significance and define your individual wedding day.

Client Impressions, Courtney & Jason

Published by bbender under Client Impressions

I received a very nice note from Courtney & Jason (09/07/08 wedding) that I thought would be great to share. I have just started working on their images and I’m anxious to post a few of them…

Brant,

We wanted to genuinely thank you for your amazing work yesterday. We could not be happier. For two people who are not at all used to having their pictures taken, you somehow managed to instantly make us comfortable. Your amazing work and genuine personality are an invaluable combination. It was an amazing day, and you were such a very important contributor to that. We look forward to seeing the results of your hard work, and can not wait to treasure them for life.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

All the best,

Courtney and Jason

Melissa & Nick Wedding

Published by bbender under Weddings

When I sat down to think about what to write about this wedding, the very first word that came to mind was FUN.  For me, photographing weddings is about that.  When the bride and groom are having fun… I certainly am :-) .  I have to say this group took it to another level.  Not only did Melissa and Nick have a great time, but their bridal party was really outgoing too.  The entire day went really well and The Bahia Resort Hotel, as usual, did a fantastic job hosting them. My favorite part of the day:  when Melissa and Nick busted out the choreographed first dance, complete with all the moves!

Melissa & Aaron Wedding

Published by bbender under Weddings

Photographing weddings for friends is always so much fun.  I have known the bride, Melissa, and her family for some time. When I had the chance to meet Aaron, during their engagement session, I knew they were a perfect fit!

Being there to capture their first meeting was magical.  The first meeting between the bride and groom is one of my favorite times of the day because I like to make that a private moment between the couple while I back way off and use longer lenses.

What struck me most on their wedding day was the abundance of color.  The wedding took place at Paradise Point Resort & Spa and the grounds were spilling over with colorful flowers and plants.  Melissa and Aaron’s choice in stunning and vibrant floral arrangements by FloralWorks complimented the setting and pulled everything together beautifully.
